Conservation efforts by various groups for species on the endangered list….going, going, almost gone! Contrary to popular AR belief, the greatest danger to wild animals, especially birds, is wildlife destruction, not poaching. The trees in which these birds breed are being destroyed due to deforestation. No matter what the cause, we need to do something to help this wildlife, or they will go extinct. |

If you are a resident of PA, a great place to start protecting wildlife is in our own back yard! For more than 100 years, the PA Game Commission has managed the Commonwealth's wildlife resources for all Pennsylvanians. With the help of more than 700 full-time employees and thousands of part-timers and volunteers, the agency provides a host of benefits to wildlife, state residents and visitors. This is a group who truly care about our wildlife, without the hidden agendas of other groups who claim to care. group, interest, species or geographical area.

The Puerto Rican Amazon is the only parrot indigenous to the USA left in the wild. This parrot is extremely endangered. The Puerto Rican Amazon was listed as an endangered species (one of the 10 most endangered birds in the world) back in 1967 and the number of birds in the wild are still under 40 to date. The USFW has stepped forward to aid in a recovery project to try to increase wild populations with releasing captive bred birds. As we know, captive bred birds do not fair well in the wild. Many of the skills that are taught by being a member of an established flock are lost when captive bred. They did however build up over 100 of these birds for their captive breeding program. |

AFA has a history of directly funding medical and husbandry research as well as conservation projects designed to better manage and save endangered species in the wild; AFA promotes population management and cooperative breeding programs to insure the long-term survival, health, and genetic diversity of birds in captivity; Aviculture indirectly contributes to conservation of wild populations by providing a supply of healthy pet birds replacing the need to harvest exotic birds from the wild for this purpose; AFA is a formally recognized Non-Government Organization (NGO) allowed to participate in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). |
